Inspiration...Books!

Today I thought I would start a series about writing inspiration. In every post in this series I will talk about a different thing that inspires me to write. I know that not everyone will have the same things that inspire them, so these are just some of mine.

For this post I want to talk about one of the most common inspirations...books! I know everyone has read at least a few good novels. Do you ever get inspired by something in them?

Back to Shakespeare and before, people have been stealing things from other people's writing. Whether it's a speech, a character or even a whole plot.

Is this stealing a bad thing though? Many people have many different options on this, but I myself don't think it is bad. There's no laws against it and so long as you tweak the idea and play around with it a bit, then you aren't really stealing but being inspired.

Sometimes when reading a book I get a sudden idea for one of my own novels. It might be nothing like what you were reading, but something in the book triggered it. I always am so delighted when this happens.

Other good things about reading book is that it makes you believe you can do it. The people who wrote the books aren't really that different from you. They still have a life, family, hobbies other than writing. If they can have all that and still publish a novel, then why can't you?

Well this was much more heavy than I thought it would be. Sorry about that guys!

Please stay tuned for my next inspiration post. I wonder what I will write about?

What inspires you to write? Do you agree that taking other people's ideas and making them your own is ok? Do you love that feeling when you get an idea after reading a great book? Please telling me in a comment!

P.S sorry about missing Thoughts Thursday, but I thought this was more exciting!

  1. Oh books are a great source of inspiration. I love that feeling when I read a great book and get a ton of inspiration. Sometimes, when I'm very burnt out from writing, I'll take some time off and read a pile of books. I think that it's ok to get inspired by books and take elements of the stories, or rewrite classic stories. Like rewritten fairy tales. I love those.

    1. I know! Reading is a great way to get you back into the writing mood.
I love rewritten fairy tales! In some cases they're much better than the real thing.

It might take a while for me to reply to your comments, but know I will and that I enjoy each and everyone of them!
