Conflicting Characters

Sometimes I find that speech in books is very different from speech in real life. Same with thing people feel and what they do.

This often annoys me. It makes the story feel less believable, even for fantasy novels! It doesn't give me the feeling that the characters are real.

Why? Well the speech or feeling doesn't match the character and so we don't feel like that character is a bit stretched.

My thoughts as to what to do about this are quite simple. My number one suggestion is to go through everything about your character. Where do they live? What do they like? How does this affect them? What is it more likely that they are going to think because of this? Not what sounds awesome.

Another good thing you can do is go through your own thought. For example, what would you think if you found fairies existed? What would you say? I'm sure you wouldn't accept it at once which is what a lot characters in novels do and those characters always annoy me and seem unreal.

How character's thoughts and feelings match up to who they are and what happens and where they come from is really important. It is important for it all to make sense. If a character is a guard you expect him to be very hard to sway, but if he is a young child then he will be easy.

That of course if very extreme, but I'm am just trying to show you how important the speeches and feelings are.

I hope this helps!

What do you think? Do you think that this is important? Do you have any ideas to help people make sure that they're character's thoughts, speech and feelings match the character themselves?

Inspiration...Music

Music has always been really inspiring. I know that not all writers can concentrate with music going, but for me, I always have some music going.

Music can help you concentrate, but it can do much more than just that. I can put you in the mood to write, keep you going and it can inspire you.

For me one of my favourite musicians is violinist Lindsey Stirling. Her music always gets my juices going. Most of them have no words (words distract me) and they have a nice fast beat.

I find that watching some of Lindsey's music videos always makes me want to write. I get ideas just from watching them. I can come up with whole plots just by watching one video! Crazy?

Have you ever been listening to a piece of music and suddenly it reminds you of something crazy for no real reason? Have you ever found yourself having great ideas when listening to music?

Music is one of the most inspiring thing ever. For me I couldn't live without music. It is so important to me.

If you have no ideas, go get some music! I am sure it will get your ideas flowing.

Here is one of Lindsey Stirling's music videos which I find very inspiring:

Blog Hates

Via

I think my post about my top internet hates went down rather well. So today I thought I would write a post about my biggest blog hates.

I think my biggest one would be bad language. Who wants to read a blog which says rude words every few words? I even find OMG really annoying? Do the people who say it know what they are saying? I can't stand the idea that someone would use God like that.

Another thing I hate is music! I don't mind people posting music videos or playlists that you can listen to if you feel like it, but I do mind it when people have a backing track. It is so annoying not being able to turn it off. It gets so annoying! Especially when they have music that is not really appropriate for young people to hear.

GIFs! They tend to give me a headache. Why can't people just use words to tell the story or more than one still photo? GIFs always annoy me. I can't stand them at all. I'm sorry to those of you who love them, but sometimes they get really annoying.

People telling you that you're wrong. I dislike people who seem to say 'I'm right, you're so wrong!'. I find these people so totally annoying. No one can be so certain that they're correct that they have the right to say it straight out. I hope I have never seemed to do this!

Text talk! This is everywhere. I know I listed this on my internet hates post, but it is one of my worst horrors of bloggers as well. Why not take a bit more trouble to make your writing look nice and legible?

These are my top hates of bloggers! Sorry to any of you that this offends, but this is just my view.

Do you agree? What are your biggest hates of blogs?

Inspiration...Books!

Today I thought I would start a series about writing inspiration. In every post in this series I will talk about a different thing that inspires me to write. I know that not everyone will have the same things that inspire them, so these are just some of mine.

For this post I want to talk about one of the most common inspirations...books! I know everyone has read at least a few good novels. Do you ever get inspired by something in them?

Back to Shakespeare and before, people have been stealing things from other people's writing. Whether it's a speech, a character or even a whole plot.

Is this stealing a bad thing though? Many people have many different options on this, but I myself don't think it is bad. There's no laws against it and so long as you tweak the idea and play around with it a bit, then you aren't really stealing but being inspired.

Sometimes when reading a book I get a sudden idea for one of my own novels. It might be nothing like what you were reading, but something in the book triggered it. I always am so delighted when this happens.

Other good things about reading book is that it makes you believe you can do it. The people who wrote the books aren't really that different from you. They still have a life, family, hobbies other than writing. If they can have all that and still publish a novel, then why can't you?

Well this was much more heavy than I thought it would be. Sorry about that guys!

Please stay tuned for my next inspiration post. I wonder what I will write about?

What inspires you to write? Do you agree that taking other people's ideas and making them your own is ok? Do you love that feeling when you get an idea after reading a great book? Please telling me in a comment!

P.S sorry about missing Thoughts Thursday, but I thought this was more exciting!

Internet Hates

My top two internet hates are text talk (I can’t understand it and its annoying) and trolls (they’re horrid).

I don’t know which one I hate more, but I will start with the text talk.

Number one reason I hate it, I can’t read it. I know it makes perfect sense to someone who is fluent at it, but to me it’s like another language.

Another reason I don’t like it is it doesn’t look clean. It is a mess. It doesn’t look as pretty as plain normal writing.

My advice for those who want popular blogs is to write properly. I know it’s your blog and you can’t write how you like, but if you want heaps of readers than you should try to write normally. Some of your readers can’t read text talk, like me. It doesn’t take that much more effort to put in all the vowels.

For my other hate, trolls.

Let me ask all you trolls one question? Do you like people insulting you? Saying you’re annoying or boring? I am pretty sure your answer is no!

I have no idea what would have to happen to someone to make them like that! I can’t understand why someone would humiliate themselves to the whole world like that.

My advice for trolls is to stop right there. If you want friends then you have to put in the effort to be nice.

Well that’s my view anyway!

What about you? What do you hate most on the internet? Do you agree with what I have said?

Chatting About Writing

Writers, have you ever been in a public place and found yourself staring at someone? It's not that you're being rude, it's just that you can't help it.

Then a little while later you suddenly find those people or something they've said entering your novel.

It's not really you're fault, it's just a natural thing that happens to we writers. We find ourselves working out what words would describe them best and where they could fit into our novels.

I wonder what it is that attracts us to these people? Is it what they look like? Is it what they say? I have no idea. I have never worked out why I couldn't stop staring at the old lady with the walker or the little girl eating ice cream! All I know is that they interested me.

What about you? Is it just me or do you do the same and stare off into space?
